Ever since her fans got the news that their popular television VJ Ramya Subramanian would be tying the knot, there is only one question on their minds: would she quit working after marriage? “I haven’t really taken a call on it,” she tells DC. “I wish to discontinue working as an anchor, and explore other possibilities, like working behind the scenes in film production.”
A lucky break
A graduate in Visual Communication from MOP Vaishnav Women’s College, with specialisation in television production, Ramya feels she can excel in the creative inputs required in film production, including script selection and marketing. In fact, it was her Visual Communication internship that led her to her first television break. “My specialisation for my final year of graduation required an internship in television production,” Ramya says. She went to the Vijay TV office and found herself being selected to be anchor without a screen test. She admits that her close family associate Geetha Kailash (director K. Balachander’s daughter-in- law) was instrumental in her decision to consider anchoring seriously.
Hailing from a conventional Tamilian family, Ramya was encouraged to pursue Bharatanatyam, which she practiced for seven years. It was after her arangetram that she started receiving modelling and acting offers, but declined them all.
No regrets
Ramya also had certain family restrictions while working as a VJ. “Though they supported me as an anchor, they were against me taking up an acting role,” Ramya reveals, “and I wasn’t allowed to touch any guy on the show, nor take part in the various dance reality shows, like Jodi Number One, even though I am good at them.” She has no regrets about this, she declares, as an impatient person like her would have easily got bored of a perpetual role on TV. “When I started anchoring, it was for the fun of it. I never considered it as a profession,” she points out.
Marital bliss
Ramya’s fiancĂ©, Ajith Jayaraman shares the name with her favourite actor, Ajith. “It is one of the reasons why I agreed to the marriage,” Ramya jokes. The primary reason, though, she adds, was that he was a total ‘Chennai freak’. Ajith and his family are highly encouraging of her work as an anchor and believe that marriage shouldn’t come in the way of her talent.
